Ghana’s Central Regional Coordinator of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), Superintendent George Appiah-Sakyi has threatened a two-year sentence on husbands who cause their wives pain by refusing to eat their food.

The superintendent, reports say, said by law, this constitutes a form of “emotional abuse which could get such husbands jailed for a maximum of two years, or fined GH¢6,000, equivalent to FCFA 572,883.

“If your husbands refuse to eat your food and make you unhappy and causes you emotional pain, you can also report them to the police. If your husband comes home late and causes you to be unhappy you can make a case at DOVVSU,” he said.

He restricted husbands from molesting their wives in any way, even if they are being insulted, saying they should rather report their wives to the police.
He said refusal of sex is punishable under Ghanaian law and wives should be reported if they deny their legal partners sex.

“If your wife wears jeans to sleep and causing you emotional abuse it’s an offence and you can report her to DOVVSU,” Superintendent Appiah-Sakyi stated.
