Ghanaian investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas has won a defamation lawsuit in the United States against a former Ghanaian parliamentarian, Kennedy Agyapong, who had made damaging allegations against him.

The ruling, delivered in a U.S. court, marks a significant legal victory for the award-winning investigative journalist known for his undercover work exposing corruption.

These damages arise from statements he made following the airing of the BBC documentary on corruption, “Betraying the Game,” on October 28, 2018.

Speaking exclusively after the verdict, Anas expressed satisfaction with the ruling, stating that it was a win not just for him but for journalism and truth.

“This victory is not just mine; it belongs to all journalists who put their lives on the line to expose corruption. It reinforces the principle that falsehoods and baseless accusations cannot stand in the face of justice,” he said.

Details of the Case

The case stemmed from accusations made by the former MP, who alleged that Anas had engaged in unethical practices during his investigations. The court, however, found no merit in the claims and ruled in favour of the journalist.

Anas, known for his trademark beaded mask and secrecy surrounding his identity, emphasised the importance of defending the integrity of investigative journalism.

“We operate in a dangerous environment where powerful people try to silence us with lies and intimidation. This ruling is a reminder that the truth will always prevail,” he added.

The verdict is expected to have ripple effects beyond Ghana. It could further set a legal precedent for journalists facing defamation suits and attacks on their credibility. Anas reaffirmed his commitment to his work, stating that this victory only strengthens his resolve.

“I will not be deterred. This is a battle for transparency, accountability, and justice, and I remain committed to exposing wrongdoing wherever it exists,” he declared.

Anas’ investigative work has also led to high-profile corruption exposes across Africa, including in politics, the judiciary, and sports.

His latest victory in court reaffirms his stance against attempts to discredit his work through legal attacks.
