Government has learnt nothing and forgotten nothing: Impassable road cuts Bamenda off from the rest of the country again

Travellers heading in and out of Cameroon are once more stranded due to the nature of the roads.

Last night, hundreds spent several hours waiting for their vehicles to meander through the mud-ridden roads abandoned by authorities for several years.

Government has for several years now made repeated promises of constructing a state of the art road to link the North West region to the West Region. This road serves largely as the nation’s breadbasket, but has always ended in speeches.

Weeks back, the road to Bamenda was completely cut off from the rest of the country after the first rains swept off an entire section of the earth road.

Following public outcry and what is believed to be shame on the part of the government, a makeshift arrangement was made for traffic to resume.

The minister of Public works then promised to ensure not only the construction of the particular stretch, but also to ensure travellers on the entire road have a better road to ply.

The promise till date has not been effected, and the current condition makes it way easier to travel to Nigeria from the region than it is to get to the other parts of the country.

With traffic at a standstill once more, many are beginning to question government’s neglect of the road, perceived as intentional.

With the North West region experiencing an armed conflict already, the lack of an adequate road into the region from the rest of the country is not making matters any better for the population of the region.

Is government through its neglect be enforcing the seccessionist ideology or only ‘punishing’ Anglophones?
