Government renovates fruit terminal at Douala port

By Amina Hilda.

Government has carried out renovation works at the fruit terminal of the port of Douala.

The move, officials have say aims to boost competitiveness of the banana sector.

New tractors, a good looking container area, the fruit terminal of the port of Douala have been revamped.

The upgraded compartment will cut handling costs per ton in half.

A boost for Cameroon’s banana association ASSOBACAM.

“The government has played its role of facilitor and promoter of production. Hit handling, reduced by 50%. This will permit producers to be more competitive on the market.” Franklin Ngoni Njie, president of ASSOBACAM noted.

The inauguration saw a strong mobilization of public authorities.

The government sees it as a tool for strengthening the competitiveness of the banana sector.

Due to the negative impact of the Anglophone crisis on the CDC, banana production in Cameroon has fallen by 100,000 tonnes in recent years, stagnating at around 200,000 tonnes now.

However, the government welcomes resilience of the sector since banana remains the third export product of Cameroon despite the difficulties.
