Nearly two years after Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute ordered repairs on roads in Yaoundé, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has started filling potholes on the streets of the Cameroonian capital city.

Bulldozers have begun scrapping off dilapidated tar on major roads to pave the way for rehabilitation works.

The works started around the National Assembly area, leading to Post Central in the heart of Yaoundé, and also Texaco Omnisport–Fouda junction.

Two companies are carrying it out for a total of FCFA 13 billion.

The rehabilitation of potholes was set to begin in 2022, but it faced delays due to the mobilisation of only FCFA 1.5 billion at that time, as stated by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Celestin Ketcha Courtes.

In November 2023, the Prime Minister, Dr Joseph Dion Ngute, again ordered the immediate rehabilitation of broken roads in the city.

Yet, work failed to commence as only FCFA 4.5 billion was available as of July 2024, according to Minister Ketcha Courtes.

Despite the initial estimate of FCFA 13 billion for the project, the amount fell short.

Works Finally Kickoff

Now, construction works are ongoing, but the minister has not disclosed how much of the required funds she has secured for the project.

Potholes and garbage have plagued Yaoundé and its roads, and it was the primary responsibility of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
