The inauguration and fundraising event for the Great Soppo Cultural and Development Association (GRESCUDA) marked a significant milestone for the community on Saturday, April 13th, in Bakweri town, Buea.

Representatives from various corners gathered under the banner of GRESCUDA to chart a course for the advancement and prosperity of the region.

Addressing the assembly, His Majesty Etinna Monono, chief of Great Soppo, emphasised the urgency of local initiatives amidst the ongoing challenges: “It is essential that, amidst the crisis, villages should put in every effort to improve our situation. Are we going to wait for the government?”

The focal point of the event was a fundraising drive aimed at constructing a comprehensive community center. Dr. Assala Monono, President of GRESCUDA, highlighted the manifold benefits this initiative would bring: “It’s a multipurpose complex that is going to cost us over 257 million frs to serve as a museum, a library, a hall to resolve health issues, a dispensary, a pharmacy, and a daycare centre so that the people around should not go very far to have those vital services. We are also offering scholarship schemes and looking into improving our water supply within the community.”

The proceedings garnered attention from dignitaries, including the Senior Divisional Officer for Fako, Viang Mekala, who commended the initiative as a complement to government-led development endeavours.

Speaking at the event, Viang Mekala praised the efforts of the community, noting their significant contribution to supporting government actions in the region.

GRESCUDA, established to harness the potential of the diverse population of Great Soppo, the largest village in Fako division, aims to foster development and progress.

The event saw the presence of traditional, local, religious, and administrative figures, alongside renowned Cameroonian musician Mola Mongombe, lending credence to the broad support for GRESCUDA’s endeavours.
