Students of the Civil Engineering Department of Government Technical High School Kumba have built a monument which fetched them Secondary Education Minister’s third best prize for the Southwest Region during the Open Door Day for technical colleges.

The monument was officially exhibited to the public on Thursday, March 9, during Open Door Day celebrations in Kumba, Meme Division of the Southwest.

The monument was among several products displayed by students as GTHS Kumba hosted other technical colleges in Meme during the Open Door Day.

The occasion that was chaired by the Meme Senior Divisional Officer Chamberlain Ndong held under the theme, “Showcasing made-in-Cameroon products through inclusive, pluralistic and quality education resilient to Cameroon’s industrial, technological and environmental challenges.”

The theme reflects Government’s drive to boost the local industry, as Cameroon seeks to break heavy reliance on imported products.

One of the strategies being used to achieve this is by encouraging technical and vocational education and entrepreneurship.

According to Southwest Governor Bernard Okalia Bilai, who Chaired the Open Door Day occasion in Buea, the government is modifying the secondary school curriculum so that it lays emphasis on skill acquisition, business and entrepreneurship in order to curb unemployment.

Apart from GTHS Kumba, other technical colleges won Ministerial prizes.

GTHS Molyko Buea won the first prize in the Southwest Region and GTHS Mamfe took the second prize for what their students produced for the Open Door Day.
