Thousands gathered at the Guneku Fons Palace this past weekend for the second annual Michi Ebeng festival, a vibrant celebration of Meta culture. The festival, initiated by His Royal Highness Dr. Fomuki Ticha IX, Fon of Guneku village, brought together 13 Nkwem dance groups, Meta traditional rulers, and community members for a two-day extravaganza.

While the event is usually organised by Guneku village, it involves the celebration of the cultural richness and diversity of all of the Meta clan.

The March 23rd event marked the culmination of the festival, which began on March 21st. Thirteen Meta Kwem dance groups competed, showcasing the traditional Nkwem dance and reigniting cultural pride.

In his opening address, Fon Dr. Fomuki Ticha IX expressed hope that the Michi Ebeng festival would foster unity among the Meta people and contribute to a comprehensive revival of Meta culture.

Following the Fon’s remarks, prominent figures including festival committee president Fongoh P. Anyeh, Meta Fons Union President HRH Dr. Fombo, and MECUDA President General Prof. Njoh Oliver all addressed the crowd. Their messages focused on articulating the importance of preserving and celebrating Meta cultural heritage.

The festival was not just about dance. Alongside the energetic Nkwem performances, attendees had the opportunity to admire a showcase of rich Meta cultural artifacts. The Nkwem dance performances were accompanied by the exhibition of Meta’s rich cultural artifacts, adding depth to the cultural extravaganza.

After over 6 hours of cultural celebration, the day’s events culminated in a thrilling competition, with the Guneku Kwem dance group emerging victorious. The Buea Kwem dance group and Tua-Chup Kwem dance group secured second and third place respectively.

As the lively festival drew to a close, organizers announced the date for the third edition of Michi Ebeng – April 12th, 2025. The enthusiasm surrounding this year’s event suggests that the Michi Ebeng festival is poised to become a cherished tradition, ensuring the continuation of Meta cultural practices for generations to come.
