Hajj 2022:
Muslims accuse Atanga Nji of extortion, cancel trip to Mecca

By Amina Hilda

Some Muslim faithful have resortedly annulled their trip to Mecca for this year’s Hajj, accusing the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji of extortion.

In the past two years, the trips to Mecca had been suspended following the outbreak of COVID-19. Many who said they had expected to embark on the spiritual journey but may end up not travelling owing to the amount by Minister Atanga Nji as cost for the trip. It stands at 3, 294, 000 FCFA per person.

The hajj 2022 fee has witnessed a 47% increase this year as compared to other years. Most Muslims have therefore blamed the increase in cost to Minister Atanga Nji.

Imam Daouda Issa, a Muslim faithful said: “According to the principles of Islam, the hadj can be renewed after five years but honestly this year, I can’t go back because the fee is too much. It keeps increasing as days go by”.

It is in this light that Imam Modibo revealed that the hadj would have been better off if handled by a commission comprised of people who master the religion. ” I proposed that, the issue of Mecca should be left in the hands of an independent commission with members who master the Islamic religion, if not we will not cope,” Modibo stated.

According to Imam Daouda, the slots of the prices are not even clear, ” What hurts are the different slots. We don’t know which prices are for what, what do they meant by extra charges? And the extra charges is about 100,000 CFA. Things are not transparent at all, let the territorial Administration ministry give us the details”.

They claimed that, the amount imposed as hadj fee is twice the amount requested from Muslims in neighboring countries for the same exercise.
