How accountable are Cameroonian MPs?

Apart from sitting in Parliament and merely adopting bills proposed by the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, CPDM party, there is indeed much more that the Cameroonians Members of Parliament could do in terms of accountability.

Despite being unable to hold the government to account, the people who voted them do not know how micro-project grants are actually used.

In other words, the People would be thrilled to have knowledge of the projects that have been drawn out and how possible they can actually be realized.

In the ongoing March Session of Parliament, out of 179 Parliamentarians who are alive, only Hon. Nourane Foster Fotsing of Cabral Libii’s PCRN Party tabled a number of projects and asked her Wouri-East constituents to choose which of the projects would be ideal to begin with.

That indeed proves accountability and utmost collaboration between the MP and the people who voted her to the position.

However, 178 other members maintain suspicious silence on the money being issued for micro-projects.

Perhaps, it is time Cameroonians begin asking these pertinent questions to their representatives. What projects do they actually have to help their people forge ahead? What happens with the money they are given for the execution of these ‘ghost’ projects? How do the people benefit from these projects in the short term and the long term?
