ICT University Launches First Book Written By A Cameroonian Higher Institution

The ICT University has today completed the launching of its book titled, “A Panoramic Literature Review of Covid-19”.

The book which has been authored by several professors and Ph.D students of the institution is the first ever publication by a Cameroonian University, and one of the fewest in Africa.

The launch which was chaired by Cameroon’s Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Madam Minette Libom Li Likeng, took place at the Hilton Hotel in Yaoundé.

Amongst other dignitaries present at the launch was the President of the ICT University, Professor Victor Mbarika, and renowned Cameroonian Professor and International Relations Specialist, Prof. Jean Emmanuel Pondi, who also reviewed the book.

In an oral overview of the publication at today’s launch, Professor Jean Emmanuel Pondi mentioned key aspects of the Covid-19 pandemic which has been highlighted throughout the book, with particular emphasis given to how the pandemic has affected Africa and Cameroon in several aspects.

Some of the highlights of the book as pointed out by Prof Pondi include; a distinction in the 7 different variants of the Covid-19 and Sars virus; The different levels of the virus; Available scientific and traditional medication to the virus; measures to be taken at an African level to contain the virus; and it’s impacts on different domains such as Tourism, Health and Economy amongst a list of others.

The Government representative at the Launch, Minister Minette Libom Li Likeng praised the initiative taken by the ICT University in doing what no other Cameroon University has been able to achieve so far.

She was also delighted given that many would not expect the ICT University to take particular interest in a Global Health Pandemic which is not IT.

“The ICT University’s involvement in Covid-19 makes it clear to all that ICTs are at the heart of all what we do contemporarily… The book is in line with policies adopted by Government to fight Covid-19 pandemic in Cameroon,” she praised.

As the Minister of Telecommunications, Minister Li Likeng has encouraged all Cameroonians to embrace the use of ICTs, but also pointed out that “ICTs can only be checked to ensure that it is being used for the right purposes.”

Speaking to the press after the launch, Professor Jean Emmanuel Pondi lauded the efforts of the authors of the publication.

“This is a unique book, and what is most important is the fact that it comes from Ph.D students. This shows active research as these students are not resting unless their best is out… I will recommend the book to anyone because it is a publication that gives us a full view of the issues linked to Covid-19,” he added.

The President of the ICT University, Professor Victor Mbarika expressed his delight at what the students and Professors of the ICT University had come up with.

The inspiration behind the book titled ‘A Panoramic Literature Review of Covid-19’ he says is due to the fact that “Africa has to write its own stories. We cannot be relying on publications from the U.S and from the U.K etc. That is why we have to document the case of the Covid-19 otherwise the other parts of the world won’t talk about it for us.”

Professor Mbarika was also keen at directing a slide dig at the West for its false predictions of the Covid-19 situation in Africa when the pandemic was still at its early stages.

“Remember when it was said that Africa would be full of body bags as a result of the pandemic? As we can see Africa has done rather well compared to other parts of the world with regards to Covid-19,” he bashed.

After a successful event, the authors of the book have made it clear that the book will act as a future reference to many people as to how the Covid-19 pandemic affected Africa at its peak.
