Yaounde-based Information and Communication Technology, ICT University has been identified as a beam of hope in Cameroon’s complex educational system.
Its modules, modus operandi and exceptional output once more came to light at its 6th graduation ceremony.
Most prominent at the ‘August gathering’ was former Nigerian President and one time AU Chairperson, Olusegun Obasanjo who played the role of key speaker.
Held at the Yaounde Conference Center, it had in attendance hundreds drawn from all walks of life including diplomats from Nigeria, South Africa and Uganda.
Introducing the former Nigerian statesman as key speaker, the Founder and Current ICT University President, Prof Victor Mbarika said Olusegun Obasanjo had set an unrivaled pace and was a figure aspiring African leaders should all look up to.
The 1976-1979 Nigerian leader in his part, said he too was living his dreams, by being witness to the amazing work of the ICT University.
His presentation was titled: ‘the hidden processor for success beyond ICT knowledge and skills’.
“You are investing in the graduating students and all the others students that are in this institution. You are investing in their development, you are investing in their today for their family, you are investing in their today of their community and tomorrow. You are investing in the today of this country and its progress and development of tomorrow.
Its a wise investment and I can always pray that God will compensate you for your hard work” he told the University.
Turning to the graduating students, Obasanjo who too was Nigerian President from 1999-2007 said the course work was over but life was just starting: “After four or more years depending on the course of studying, of lectures, counsel, intenship and in fact practical projects like the one you have shown here you are now ready to be admitted for the various degrees. Your families and friends have congregated here today because of you”.
“This training has positioned you to be a major player in the fifth industrial revolution and made you catalysts for the pursue of sustainable development goals and the African Union’s targets” he told them.
All that they have gathered in their quest for knowledge, the former AU Chair said, was useless if they failed to grab opportunities at every given moment.
*’Stay commited’*
He instructed: “You must be able to smell opportunities like a dog with an acute sense of smell… You can hardly achieve much with wavering and unsteady attention to any course or project. Commitment will enhance your competent and performance. Whatever you have to do, do it with all your heart, body, mind and soul”.
Urging the graduands to be patriots, Olusegun Obasanjo said their primary mission was to impart their respective communities in all ways possible.
“Always remember that your community needs you, Cameroon needs you and the world needs you,” he told them, adding “You have been prepared for the task ahead and the time to prove it is now. There will be challenges but you have all it takes to go through and delivery is very important”.
*New Higher Education Vision*
Among speakers at the graduation ceremony was Higher Education Minister, Prof Jacques Fame Ndongo.
Recognizing the former President as an examplery peace icon, he said his part played in resolving the Bakassi peninsula dispute years back remains unforgettable in the annals of history.
The ICT University, Minister Fame Ndongo stated, had aligned its ways with the exact objectives set by government, and was “… a reliable partner to the Cameroonian government in the training, education and transformation of young Cameroonians…”.
Saluting the vision of the Founder of the University, he remarked that “the project allows the normal course of teaching during this [Covid-19-characterised] period without interruption”.
