Few days to school resumption in Cameroon, the former archbishop of the metropolitan archdiocese of Douala has stated that school resumption can not be a reality in the North West and South west regions of Cameroon.

In a joint press conference with hon. Jean Jacques Ekindi, National Coordinator of Progressive Movement Party Wednesday August 21, 2019 in Douala, the Cardinal calls on the government to urge military to return to the barracks and at the same time, requests ambazonia fighters to lay their weapons. Cardinal Tumi has denied calls that the military should disarm in the anglophone regions. He stresses that the military should hold the arms in the barracks ready to defend the citizens from external enemies and not to kill civilians as it is the case today in the anglophone regions.

In his own words, the Cardinal states: ” Peace is capital for going back to school. This is a conviction i hold very strongly.” Cardinal Tumi waved aside calls made by members of government and other rights groups, for school resumption in the restive regions without addressing the issue of peace and a ceasefire. In his opinion, Cardinal said, no parent or child will support the idea of school now, if the bullets continue flying in the air.

But it seems his message was viewed differently by his co-host. Hon. Jean Jacques Ekindi on his part, announced the the launching of a mega peace crusade in Douala on the 29th of August 2019 to champion peace and back to school in English speaking Cameroon.

Questioned if by joining the peace initiative of Jean Jacques Ekindi it means the process to organising Anglophone General Conference has failed, Cardinal Tumi says, “preparation for the dialogue platform is on course.” He points that more than one thousands anglophones have already filled questionnaires answering some of the key questions on the causes and solutions to the crisis.
