Muslims in Buea and its environs gathered at the Buea Town Mosque on Sunday, June 17, 2024, to celebrate Eid al-Adha, the feast of sacrifice. The celebration was presided over by the Imam of the Buea Central Mosque, Alhadji Mohammed Abubakar, with administrative and local authorities in attendance.

This special day was observed under the theme “Faith and Trust in Allah, Yield Positive Results.”

During his speech, the Imam urged leaders to shun hypocrisy and protect human lives. “We have troubles left and right, Cameroon is suffering, a lot of countries are going through different challenges. Leaders are standing up, but not enough; there is hypocrisy in all that they are doing. The human life should be valued. There should be solidarity, love, cooperation and keep away hatred and jealousy,” he told MMI.

“It is time for countries and leaders to return back to their shelves, research, and see what God meant by creating a human. It is time enough for leaders to stand up,” he concluded.

Ousmane Mohammed, a Muslim faithful, urged others to build the community. “All of our brothers and sisters, the Muslims and non-Muslims outside, we should all come together to see how we can develop our community, our mindset, and society,” he told MMI.

Ibrahim Mohamed described the celebration as “the best day in our lives as Muslims.”

Aisha, a Muslim resident in Buea, shared with MMI that this was an opportunity for her to meet family and friends.

To fulfill the commandment of Prophet Mohammed, the Imam of the Buea Central Mosque, on behalf of the Muslim community, sacrificed a ram to Allah.

Muslims worldwide celebrate Eid al-Adha to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s readiness to sacrifice his son as a sign of obedience to God. During this time, they sacrifice permissible animals, generally goats, sheep, and cows.

According to Islamic rules, the animal must be an adult and in good health, and British law additionally mandates that the animal must be killed in an official slaughterhouse. The meat is then divided among family, friends, and the poor. Other Muslims give money to charity to provide poorer families the chance to have a proper Eid feast. Mosques or other groups may arrange communal meals.
