Gunmen in Bamenda have claimed another victim from among the internally displaced population, according to reports. Shey Selamo Marcel, identified as a retired soldier and an IDP, was fatally shot on Foncha Street on Monday, July 8th. Eyewitnesses recounted that the assailants, riding a motorcycle, fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
While there are some speculations that the killers are Ambazonia separatists, who targeted Marcel because he is a former soldier, MMI has been unable at this time to confirm this as no group has claimed responsibility for the killing.
Marcel, who had relocated to Bamenda from Kumbo in Bui division due to threats from Ambazonia separatist militants, succumbed to his injuries at a nearby health facility. His family members described him as leading a quiet life on Ghana Street, having fled his hometown, where the separatist conflict had taken a toll on his family.
His father reportedly passed away due to trauma caused by the crisis, which included the burning of their family compound and the death of his brother.
The ongoing conflict in the Anglophone regions has resulted in numerous civilian casualties, turning Bamenda and other affected areas into scenes of tragedy.
Reports indicate a rise in targeted killings, further deepening the anguish of families already suffering from the prolonged unrest. The violence underscores the persistent challenges in resolving the separatist conflict, with peace remaining elusive amid continued bloodshed.
