As speculations rife of a possible technical shutdown of internet in the conflict hit North West and South West regions of Cameroon, civil society actors and technology entrepreneur have cautioned and advised the population on how to receive the cuts.
The Board Chair of Activspaces and CEO of AppsTech Rebecca Enonchong Tweeted: “I suggest that you install now..Don’t wait until the last minute. But if they do full cut as they did last year, VPNs won’t help. Download fireChat as well. It doesn’t need internet.”
She was reacting to a tweet which suggested possible internet shutdown before or on election day calling on the English Speaking population to download VPN.
The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications debunked similar allegations few weeks back qualifying it as fake news.
It remain unclear whether the measure will be implemented but MTN has in the past 24hours been sending messages to apologise for the unstable connections provoked by an incident on the optical fibre.
