Rebecca Enonchong, a renowned Cameroonian IT expert and one of Africa’s 50 most powerful women in 2023, recently met with presidential candidate Barrister Akere Muna.

Although the meeting, held in Douala, focused on technology, it has sparked speculation about whether Enonchong might support Akere, who recently announced his candidacy for the 2025 elections.

Barrister Akere Muna revealed that their discussion touched on “systemic issues in Cameroon’s IT sector.”

He praised Enonchong’s expertise in a post on his Facebook page.

“Her vast knowledge and experience are truly inspiring. As technology rapidly evolves, her work in promoting tech and empowering youth in Africa is more crucial than ever.”

Rebecca Enonchong has been less forthcoming about the meeting but retweeted Muna’s post on X.

“What a great conversation. Always a pleasure to learn from your wisdom and experience,” accompanied by a photo of the two.

Enonchong’s Political Activism

Rebecca Enonchong, who lives in the United States, is a vocal critic of the Biya regime.

She was once arrested for her outspoken opposition to corruption in the government, which has ruled Cameroon for over 42 years.

Despite this, she is highly respected internationally for her contributions to IT.

Her endorsement could significantly boost Akere Muna’s campaign.

Rebbecca Enonchong commands considerable influence in Cameroon’s tech community, especially as one of the founders of Silicon Mountain, Central Africa’s largest tech hub, located in the South West region.

Rebecca Enonchong’s Criticism of Biya’s Leadership

Following President Paul Biya’s end-of-year address on December 31, Enonchong expressed her frustration with what she described as empty speeches void of concrete actions.

“You’ve listed the problems. You know them. But I implore you to take action,” she said.

Enonchong has also urged opposition parties to unite around shared issues, such as recurring power outages and freedom of speech.

To her, a fragmented opposition cannot defeat long-serving Biya.

“Working together on actions also allows us to see better who has the capacity to make their points count, who has the best communication, and above all, can this person lead a team?” she questions.

To her, a leader of the coalition is decided at the end and not at the beginning.
