Issa Hayatou “rejected” as Lamido of Garoua

Ibrahim Souleymanou Alrachi has been elected Lamido (Fulani traditional ruler) of Garoua in the North region of Cameroon. In an election on Monday, May 10th 2021, Ibrahim Alrachi obtained seven out of twelve votes.

Among the twelve candidates who contested for the position of traditional authority in Garoaua was Isa Hayatou, former president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Despite years of leadership and management experience amass as a president of CAF and interim president of World football governing body FIFA, notables of the Lamidat of Garoua rated Issa Hayatou not worthy to be a Lamido of Garoua. He scored two votes.

The new Lamido, Ibrahim Souleymanou Alrachi, 40, replaces late Lamido Alim Hayatou who died recently. Alim Hayatou was equally the secretary of state in charge of pandemic and epidemic at the ministry of public health in Cameroon.

The new Lamido shoulders the responsibility of not only preserving the tradition and culture of the people of Garoua — but equally collaborating with authorities to maintain security.
