John Dramani Mahama has taken the oath of office to become Ghana’s 5th President since the fourth republic started in 1993.

He was sworn in this Tuesday, January 7, for a four-year mandate, following a presidential election on December 7, 2024.

This is Mahama’s second time of becoming President. He held the office from 2012 to 2016 before losing elections to outgoing President Nana Afufo Addo.

Ghanaians welcomed the swearing on Tuesday with jubilation. They want to see change in the economy.

President Mahama Promises Better Economy

In his inaugural speech, President John Mahama praised his predecessor for what he has done for the country.

Aside from that, he signaled stronger ties with Ghana’s neighbors to keep the country safe from jihadist attacks.

“We are part of one another, one big family,” he said.

“I feel honored you consider me worthy to steer the affairs of the nation.”

He said his election was a powerful message by Ghanaians who were deeply unsatisfied with the outgoing regime.

To him, the outcome of democracy should benefit people who protect it.

“Today marks the beginning of a new opportunity. We shall reset our dear nation, Ghana, he said.

He assured that his electoral victory will not distract him from the work he would do for Ghanaians.

He appealed for cooperation and help from Ghanaians to change the country.

“I will be decisive and swift in my action. Stabilizing the economy and ensuring Ghana is open for business. Will ensure constitutional reforms and ensure accountability and transparency,” the President said.

He told the Ghanaian business community he will “help in shaping a business environment where creatives thrive. Innovations will be the backbone of our economy. Ghana is open for business again”.
