Journalist Fah Elvis reportedly arrested in Buea

By Tata Mbunwe

Information reaching MMI newsroom says the journalist and TV commentator, Fah Elvis Tayong, was arrested at Bonduma Gate, Buea, this evening.

Buea-based Journalist and Dash FM Station Manager, Joseph Weno, said about six police officers bundled him into their pickup without offering any explanation.

Weno also sounded uncertain about Fah Elvis’ current whereabouts.

Fondly called the Kangaroo Man, Fah Elvis has been vocal in recent political television programs that he has featured, including on My Media Prime TV, where he sternly blasted the country’s governance system.

Aside from his media engagements, Fah Elvis is also a member of the CRM party of Prof Maurice Kamto, who has been vocal against President Paul Biya’s 41-year rule.

It is not clear if Fah’s arrest is linked to his political and media engagements.

While the Cameroon Government has a long history of cracking down on opposition voices and political activists, restrictions on freedom of expression and association have increased prior to next year’s Presidential elections, according to Human Rights Watch.

Among moves widely criticized by opposition leaders and human rights organizations are the arbitrary arrest and detention of activists Junior Ngombe and Ramon Cotta earlier this year.

While Ngombe was released on bail last month, Cotta who was arrested and ferried from Gabon is still behind bars.
