Journalist Wawa Jackson clocks 18 months in detention

Bamenda based journalist, Wawa Jackson has spent 18 months in detention now after he was arrested without a warrant in Nkambe in the North West region on May 15, 2018 by elements of the gendarmerie.

At the time of arrest, he was returning to Bamenda from a private visit in his native Tabenken village. As a result of Following pressure from the defense counsel, Barrister Ngwang Shey he was presented before the state prosecutor three days after his arrest. Jackson was accused of publishing seccessionist information to which he pleaded not guilty. The case has since then however experienced a series of twists and turns.

With over 30 court appearances, there seems to be no progress making critics raise eyebrows regarding the intentions behind him being held.

Hope seemed to be on the horizon when President Biya ordered the discontinuance of proceedings against some 333 persons arrested for misdemeanors in relation to the Anglophone Crisis. Jackson was however not released

In about four sessions the presiding judge kept promising that he is still working on the judgements and later took an uncertain leave in June. It is therefore still uncertain when the case will resume as the pressman languishes in jail.

Jackson is one of several other journalists that have met the heavy hands of the law I’m the line of duty. Samuel Wazizi, another picked up in Buea has for months been no where to be seen, raising fears that he has been killed.
