The Yaoundé Chapter of the Cameroon English-Speaking Journalists Association, CAMASEJ says it reserves the right to take legal action against the Yaoundé V Council following the torture of Canal 2 pressmen.

Chia Hycinth, his cameraman and driver, CAMASEJ notes were beaten by council policemen as they interviewed protesting commercial motorbike riders.

“Despite proper identification by Chia and his team, the municipal police agents went ahead to illegally detain them on the spot and seized their working tools which are still in the keeping of the Yaoundé V Council,” the CAMASEJ Yaounde President, Eugene Ndi said in a statement.

CAMASEJ Yaoundé, he said, reserves “the right to take legal action against the perpetrators of this odious act…”.

The body further noted that the attack came a few days to the Press Freedom Day commemorated every May 3rd.

“We call on journalists to stand for their rights and report any acts of torture , coercion or intimidation intended to silence them,” the statement added.
The association also called on the council to “… quickly open investigation and punish perpetrators”.

The Yaoundé V Council has remained mute over the incident as well as the violent clashes between bike riders and council police agents.
