Junior Pope: Cameroonians mourn tragic loss of a Nollywood icon

Cameroonians have joined the rest of the world in mourning the shocking demise of Nigerian actor John Paul Obumneme Odonwodo, widely known as Junior Pope. His death has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry in Cameroon, leaving fans and colleagues in mourning.

Junior Pope’s passing was confirmed on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, following a tragic boat accident while he was returning from a movie shoot.

The news has prompted an outpouring of grief from Cameroonian entertainers, who took to social media to express their condolences.

Syndy Emade, a movie figure in Cameroon, said Pope’s death made it difficult for her to focus well while on set. The producer and actor received the news in Nigeria where she is shooting a movie.

“The risk we take on this job. Please, every producer, do your best to put the necessary measures in place when filming in risky zones or risky scenes. All of this could have been avoided just with life jackets and at least a lifeguard onset,” she said.

Emade, like many, had heaved a sigh of relieve when news circulated on Wednesday evening about Pope’s resuscitation.

But the Actors Guild of Nigeria again confirmed him dead a few hours.

Cameroonian musician Wax Dey, known for his collaborations with Nigerian artists, shared his grief on social media, urging others to learn life-saving techniques such as CPR.

“I’ve been hoping someone would say again that it wasn’t true. Make sure we all use social media to learn about CPR…,” he wrote on Facebook.

The late actor shared a bond with Cameroon. He was born to Nigerian parents in Bamenda, headquarters of the North West Region, where he did primary and secondary education before moving to Nigeria.

Entrepreneur and content creator Tita Eric echoed sentiments of grief, emphasizing the need for workplace safety and risk assessment.

“This is a great loss for Africa, Nigeria, and all his fans worldwide, he said.

“While I send my condolences to his family and the entire movie industry, I would like to state that safety at work should never be neglected, no matter who you think you are. Always conduct a risk assessment to determine the worst thing that can happen and take measures to prevent it,” he added.

The news of Junior Pope’s death initially sparked hope when reports emerged that he was still alive. However, these hopes were dashed when the actor’s passing was confirmed by Emeka Rollas, the National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN).

Amid the expressions of grief, Senior Pastor, a popular comedian, initially rejoiced upon hearing news of Junior Pope’s survival, only to later lament his passing once again.

The circumstances surrounding Junior Pope’s death have deeply affected many Cameroonians, given the close collaboration between Nigeria and Cameroon in the entertainment industry.

Junior Pope was an actor, model, and philanthropist born on May 7, 1984, in Bamenda, Cameroon, to Mr. and Mrs. Odonwodo.

He hails from the Ukehe tribe of Enugu State in the south-eastern part of Nigeria.

He completed both his primary and secondary school education in Cameroon before relocating to Nigeria.

After his college education, he furthered his education at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State, and graduated with a degree in accounting.

He joined Nollywood in 2006 and primarily played the roles of guard and servant.

In 2007, he rose to fame after acting in the blockbuster movie “Secret Adventures,” directed by Tchidi Chikere.

According to him, it was the award-winning movie director, Tchidi Chikere who brought him to the limelight.

He acted in over 100 movies, including Secret Adventures, Mad Sex, Bitter Generation, Véngeance of Bullet, among others.

In 2010, he won the award for Nollywood’s Most Promising Actor at the Entertainment Factory Awards.

On July 26, 2014, Junior Pope got married to Jennifer Awele Okpuno, and the couple was blessed with three boys.
