The President of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement, MRC, Maurice Kamto has called for reorganization and reorientation of the country’s defense and security forces.
In a May 20 address to the nation, the opposition leader said the country’s security situation keeps depreciating “… and has rendered official propaganda on peace inaudible is jeopardizing the foundations of our young nation…”.
“On this very special 20th May 2021 National Day, the military and other members of the defense and security forces who put their lives at risk to defend our beautiful common heritage deserve more than in the past, the nation’s full attention,” he noted.
He said “as a result of the historical dysfunctions and organized misused of the military institution and security services in our country since independence some military and security service personnel believe that they are at the service of the regime”.
Kamto went on to note that among his proposed reforms, is that of reeducating and realigning the forces of law and order. This, he added, was meant to, through a national defense and security policy, instill professionalism and order in the sector.
“This organized political hijacking … has ended up installing the false idea that members of the defence and security forces owe loyalty and fidelity to the person rather than the constitution and institutions of the republic and to the nation …,” Kamto lamented.
With regards to the army’s actions in the different conflict situations nationwide, Kamto stated that “There have been errors here and there and even serious mistakes in the role of operational forces. We must correct them prevent them and impose sanctions where necessary”.
“In the Cameroon of tomorrow, we shall place justice rule of law good governance respect for human dignity the honor of our soldiers and democracy at the heart of our political action,” the MRC leader promised.
He added: “We are building this Cameroon now on the sufferings of all political prisoners, those of my party and several others from different political parties, journalists, whistleblowers, illegally arrested and arbitrarily imprisoned…”.
It should be noted that contrary to previous editions, this year and last year’s commemoration of the national day in Cameroon went without any public events owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.
