Trending news stories in Cameroon – 20th May, 2021

Contrary to popular expectation in Cameroon, work and school resume tomorrow Friday, May 21, 2021, after a public holiday observed today to mark the celebration of National Day 2021. Earlier, rumors had circulated that Friday will be a public holiday.

Some locals in Banganté in the West region of Cameroon say the election of Eric Niat as Mayor of Bangante Council is an imposed choice by the Central Committee of the ruling CPDM party. After several adjournments of the election, Eric Niat, son of the president of the Senate Marcel Niat was elected. He replaces the former Mayor of blessed memory.

The reservation of special chairs at prestigious portions of churches in Cameroon when a member of government is invited to worship has raised questions. To some Christians, it’s discrimination and a clear indication that pastors or priests that practice this, ‘worship’ the personalities for the the positions they hold in the society.

Samuel Mvondo Ayolo, director of civil cabinet at the presidency of the Republic today represented the president in a mass in Yaounde aimed at praying for Cameroon as it celebrates its 49th National Day. His Lordship Jean Mbarga, celebrating the mass challenged worshippers to be God-fearing.
