Kamto says Bafoussam landslide is result of failed decentralization

Maurice KAMTO of the MRC has blamed the failure of the decentralization process for yesterday’s landslide. In a communique, it was explained that once he heard of the disaster he immediately dispatched one of the MRC militants in the West region to the scene.

According to a report up by the latter, the communiqué states that several dozens are dead, nearly fifty persons are missing and about houses buried

While a delegation from the National Headquarters of the MRC, will soon be sent to the area, the document noted, Maurice Kamto extends his sincere condolences and those of all militants and sympathizers of his party.

The disaster the politician says like many similar ones is as a result of the anarchic urbanization of towns nationwide.

“This is also one of the tragic tragic consequences of a failed decentralization, particularly with the appointment of the government delegates” it read.

To prevent any future occurrences, “the President-elect [Kamto] therefore emphasizes more than ever the urgency of establishing local governance based on true local democracy, allowing people to freely choose their leaders at all levels, and the chosen leaders to know that they must be accountable to the people they are called to serve” the communiqué stated.

Kamto’s stance is similar to that of Paddy Asanga who yesterday on Equinox TV said the state had failed in its housing policy.
