Kamto tells Ngannou “Let them keep their belt, you’re our champion”

Maurice Kamto, the leader of Cameroon’s opposition party, the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM), has expressed bitterness towards the result of Saturday’s combat.

The combat took place in Saudi Arabia between mixed martial artist and former UFC champion Francis Ngannou and boxing champion Tyson Fury.

Fury, at the end of the ten rounds, was proclaimed the winner over the Cameroonian fighter. A decision that has been highly criticised by many.

In a tweet made on October 29, 2023, Maurice Kamto tells Ngannou, “But how? Francis Ngannou did not win this boxing match after knocking Tyson Fury to the mat, multiplied punches that hit the mark, poaching his opponent’s left eye, and remaining as fresh as when he stepped into the ring.

Shame! Shame! Their shame will kill us! It wasn’t sport last night in a boxing ring in Saudi Arabia, but something that still eludes spectators. Francis, you did the job cleanly and with a panache against a dangerous and respectable opponent.

Thank you for your solidity and class. For us, you became the World Heavyweight Champion on Saturday night in Riyadh. Let them keep their belt, you are our champion, and your head bears the crown that no one can take from you.

It’s with this crown, braided by the spectators, that you will approach the revenge. BRAVO Champion!”

Kamto is not the only prominent figure to call out the fraud. Gary Lineker, a former British footballer and host of BBC Match of the Day also took to X to call the boxing match “robbery“. Similarly, African football icons Samuel Eto’o and Didier Drogba took to social media to make posts indicating that Francis Ngannou was the rightful winner of the duel.

A recent video by a boxing analyst has provided detailed analysis of the fight and arrived at the conclusion that Francis Ngannou was the rightful winner.
