Kamto urges Cameroonians to stage peaceful protest against upcoming regional elections, demand Biya’s resignation

The Chairman of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement, MRC has asked Cameroonians to stand in unison against the “Electoral Sham” in preparation.

Earlier on this year, Prof Maurice Kamto had addressed his followers in which he mentioned that the MRC was not going to accept elections organised within the Republic of Cameroon unless the Anglophone crisis was completely solved.

The Chairman this time around has pointed to the deteriorating conditions of the crisis in the Northwest and the Southwest region as well as the ever growing Boko Haram insurgency in the Far North region as a reference point for Cameroonians to abscond from any possible elections.

“…We have had renewed attacks by the Boko Haram in the Far North, the bloody murder of women with their babies in the same region, the Ngarbuh massacre, the murder of an infant in Muyuka, the murder with incredible cruelty of Florence AYAFOR, then of a young woman in Muyuka etc, all without an adequate response from the state,” he noted.

Kamto was equally quick to point out the current regime’s failure in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic adequately, a virus he notes killed hundreds of Cameroonians. He also referred to the ‘crappy’ preparation for the African Cup of Nations tournament (AFCON 2019) which saw the competition taken away and handed to another country.

Maurice Kamto also demanded the president to resign from power, claiming his victory of 2018 was a stolen one.

“Mr Biya has been governing the people of Cameroon through contempt and terror for almost forty years. He stole the 7th October 2018 presidential election and believed he could obtain his recognition by torturing and throwing in prison hundreds of citizens who peacefully demonstrated against this electoral hold-up” he then used this as a platform to call for a general mobilisation on June 1st, 2020 as a sign of discontent against the regime.

“My dear compatriots in my Call for general mobilisation and vigilance on the 1st of June, 2020, I invite you to be ready, so that together and peacefully we say NO to the illegal and illegitimate regime of Mr. Paul Biya if ever the process leading to the regional elections was launched without first meeting the following two requirments: Resolving the Anglophone crisis by the establishment of a ceasefire and the opening of a real inclusive national Political dialogue; Consensual reform of the current electoral system, which everyone now acknowledges that it guarantees massive electoral fraud leading to the appointment of illegitimate leaders, and therefore constitutes the main cause of electoral tensions and post-electoral crisis in our country,” he outlined.

Regional elections are scheduled to take place in the coming months as a mode of accelerating the process of decentralisation in the country.
Many Cameroonians however see this as a cosmetic measure by the government to resolve the Anglophone crisis, a move which many say is bound to fail without meaningful and genuine dialogue.
