Kamto weeps for Mautu, calls for immediate action

There has been widespread condemnation following the killing of close to 10 civilians in Mautu on Sunday.

The latest to call the forces to order is MRC opposition leader, Maurice Kamto.

“One more horror in CMR: 8 civilians massacred this January 10 in Mautu in the South West. I condemn this horror and offer my condolences to the bereaved families” the Cameroon Renaissance Movement leader wrote.

He further expressed the desire for the armed conflict to come to an end. “How many more deaths will it take for the guns to fall silent and for a political solution to finally be initiated in the NOSO?” Kamto questioned rhetorically.

To the opposition leader who was jailed for contesting President Biya’s 2018 election victory, “… peace in the NOSO (North West and South West regions) requires: an immediate ceasefire; the release of all prisoners of the Anglophone crisis; an inclusive political dialogue to discuss the form of the state”.

In addition to the above measures required, Kamto adds that there is also a need for “… the consensual reform of the electoral system so that the people can elect legitimate leaders”.

It should be recalled that one of the reasons for which Kamto was recently placed under house arrest, was because he called for a reform of the electoral code, and asked Cameroonians to take to the streets to host long-term President Biya.
