What diplomatic strings still hold Cameroon and the United States of America together?
That is the unanswered question political commentators are asking following recent recurrent opposing sides taken by these countries over the prevailing socio-political and economic unrest in Cameroon.
Cameroon’s Minister of Communication has described statements made by US Secretary of State in charge of African Affairs, asking for the release of Prof Maurice Kamto and militants of his Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM) party as a clear proof of poor mastering of what is happening in Cameroon.
In a release signed Tuesday 05th March 2019, Rene Emmanuel Sadi states that the arrest of Prof. Maurice Kamto and militants of his CRM political party on the 26th and 28th of January has nothing to do with their political views as stated by the US Assistant Secretary of State in charge of African Affairs.
The US diplomat in an exclusive interview on RFI stated that the detention of CRM militants has political undertones.
Tibor P. Nagy Jr. therefore unequivocally stated that it will be wise on the part of the Cameroon government to release people detained for expressing their political views.
To Rene Emmanuel Sadi, the charges brought against Maurice Kamto include hostility against the state, insurrection, public disorder, destruction of state property and group rebellion have nothing to do with the political believe of the detainees.
He therefore insists that it’s only the courts in Cameroon that can determine when they will be release.
The Anglophone Crisis:
As concerns the handling of the Anglophone crisis by the Cameroon government, US Assistant Secretary of State in charge of African Affairs says “…the Cameroon government needs to be very serious in the handling of the Anglophone crisis. Measures taken so far are not sufficient to resolve an extremely delicate crisis”.
By this, the US diplomat is of the opinion that all other measures taken by the Cameroon government fall short to the magnitude of the Anglophone crisis.
Responding to Mr. Tibor P . Nagy in a two page release , Cameroon’s Minister of Communication says the statement of the diplomat shows a shallow knowledge of concrete measures taken to resolve the crisis.
He says Cameroon is determined to maintain her territorial integrity with all respect of international law and the respect of human rights but with the exception of cases when the peace of the country is threatened.
Mr. Sadi explains that tangible solutions have already been provided to genuine revandications made by Anglophones while stressing that those who have taken arms against the state will be handled accordingly.
Note that US Assistant Secretary of State Tibor P.Nagy is to tour some African countries with Cameroon amongst the countries to be visited by the diplomat.
