Neighbors are somewhat celebrating the house arrest of Professor Maurice Kamto, President of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement, CRM.
They say the presence of policemen around Kamto’s house since September 21 has freed the neighborhood of thieves.
Speaking to German public broadcaster DW, Kamto’s neighbour Louis René says the presence of the police has freed them from constant harassments from thugs in the area.
“If the police can hang around for a longer time, it will do us a lot of good. It will protect us from the thugs as long as it lasts,” he said.
DW also reported that the lawyers responsible for the defense of Maurice Kamto have decided to file a complaint against his confinement which they believe is abusive.
The president of the CRM party has been under house arrest for close to a month now. The government has come under increasing pressure from Cameroonians and from the UN to grant Maurice Kamto his freedom. But as always, they have not yielded to these calls. The CRM party president was placed under house arrest alongside other political party leaders on September 21, 2020, but the others have long been freed but for Maurice Kamto. Government authorities have accused him of plotting an insurrection against the current regime.
