Kumbo: Creation of Military base paves way for return to calm in Meluf village

Persons in Meluf village in Kumbo, Northwest region, say the village has been peaceful for several weeks of calm following the creation of a military base in the locality.

A native of the locality says they had been plagued by frequent gun battles between separatist fighters and security forces.

Due to the conflict, many civilians lost their lives and several houses were burnt in the village, we gathered.

“Most of our time was spent in the bushes for fear of the military since they always came in from time to time in search of Amba Boys. But since the military camp was created in Meluf around July, we have never heard a sound of gun in Meluf and we have never slept in the bushes again,” recounted a native of the village.

Both military officers had been “tormenting” the villagers and life had been very difficult.

After a military base was setup, separatist fighters relocated to other localities so as to give peace a chance in the locality, one of the natives has said.

Our source added that the soldiers “are trying to live in peace with the population. Conclusively, I think the population appreciate their understanding as they have not been any shooting since they were stationed in Meluf. And the fact that we sleep in our houses is something we appreciate.”
