Late Mayor Ekema finally laid to rest

The late Mayor of Buea has finally been laid to rest after weeks of intense preparation for his funeral.

In what has been a busy and even difficult weekend for most, if not everyone in the town, the mayor widely known for his fight against ghost town was finally laid to rest December 14, 2019 after a ceremony that saw several events shifted to make way for the mega event.

The official burial was attended by several statesmen and women including Territorial Administration Minister Atanga Nji Paul, representative of President Paul Biya.

Speaking at the funeral, Minister Nalova Lyonga said “He [Ekema] did things we could not do. He was not perfect. He did not need to be perfect. We all have the chance to establish legacies.”

To her, “Ekema believed the elite hated him and some do. But they are the ones who have put their foot down to ensure he got a befitting burial”.

Minister Atanga Nji on behalf of President Paul Biya also decorated the late mayor posthumously as Commander of the National Order of Valour.

While some say the late statesman was given a befitting burial, others say there was a lot of extravagant spending involved.

Another highlight of the day was the high level of security all over the town. From inside the quarters to almost all major road junctions, the forces of law and order could be seen carrying out patrols.

Now that the late mayor has been laid to rest, many are eager to know who takes over the baton of command officially and how he/she hopes to cope with the challenges of their predecessor.
