Libianca Kenzonkinboum Fonji, a Cameroonian musician professionally known as Libianca, has earned two nominations at the Billboard Music Awards (BBMA).
Due to the popularity of her highly streamed track, “People,” Libianca has received nominations in two categories: Best Afrobeat Artist and Best Afrobeat Song.
She received a nomination in the category of Best Afrobeat Artist, alongside four other Nigerian artists from Africa. The included artists are Burna Boy, Rema, Tems, and Wizkid.
Many people consider the Billboard Music Awards to be one of the most prestigious music award ceremonies in the United States. The organisers determine the nominations for these awards by taking into account various factors such as album and digital song sales, streaming numbers, radio airplay, touring statistics, and social engagement.
Therefore, Libianca automatically became the first Cameroonian artist to be nominated for this prestigious award.
Libianca has received many nominations since the release of her song, “People,” including the nomination mentioned. At the 16th edition of the Headies Awards on September 3, 2023, the American musician received the title of Best Central African Artist of the Year. Many people widely recognise the Headies Awards as one of Nigeria’s most prestigious music awards.
The talented artist, who is 22 years old, released her first single titled “People” in 2022. The single received both critical acclaim and commercial success, earning numerous nominations at international levels.
The song achieved Platinum certification in the United States, selling over 1 million units in the country and recording more than 30 million streams worldwide.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced the certification on September 7, 2023. The RIAA serves as the representative for the American recording industry and is a trade association.
However, Libianca has yet to officially react to her double nomination at the Billboard Music Awards.
