Cameroonian singer, Libianca
American-based Cameroonian artist Libianca has been named the Best Central African Artist of the Year at the 16th edition of the Headies Awards. The award ceremony, which took place on Sunday, September 3, 2023, at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, also saw Rema and Burna Boy win the most awards, with three each.
Libianca, who is known for her Afropop and dancehall music, expressed her gratitude for the award, saying that it was a validation of her hard work.
“This year has really been so very good to me,” she said on Platform X (formerly Twitter).
In her category, she was nominated alongside great African artists like Fally Ipupa from the DR Congo, Gaz Mawete (DR Congo) Matias Damiaso (Angola) and Emma’A (Gabon).
The 22-year-old artist released her debut single, “People”, in 2022. The single was a critical and commercial success, and it earned her several nominations at international levels.
“People” has won platinum recognition and has earned Libianca a BET Award as Best International New Act this year, 2023. The single has also topped the charts in the United Kingdom and the United States for several weeks in a row.
Libianca’s win is a major achievement for the Central African music scene. She is the first Cameroonian artist to win the Best Central African Artist of the Year award at the Headies Awards.
The Headies Awards is one of the most prestigious music awards in Nigeria. It was founded in 2004 to celebrate the best in Nigerian music. A panel of professionals from the music industry votes on the awards each year.
