Limbe Market Vendors groan over increase in prices of basic commodities

Market vendors in Limbe of the South West region are expressing concerns over increase in the prices of basic commodities in the country.

The prices of most commodities have since skyrocketed in the market.

This has since been reducing the standard of living of many thereby affecting the economy — especially households in Limbe who can barely afford high cost of goods.

Some sellers say the prices of commodities are fluctuating, and as such discouraging buyers which affects their businesses.

For instance, after a tour round the Limbe 1 Market this Wednesday, MMI’s reporter realised that a carton of savon which initially sold at FCFA 16,500.now costs 19,500frs.

Groundnut oil which also sold at 17,500frs is now sold 22,500.

“Buyers feel we are liars so they decide buying where they think it’s cheaper. Thus, many products remain without being sold here at the market,” Claudia vendor told MMI.

Claudia however hopes for better days.

According to violette, a fish seller, the price of ‘smoked fish’ has drastically increased which has caused a drawback in her business.

“Dry fish is really expensive now. At first you could get a basin for FCFA 35000 but today, it’s sold at 48000frs,” she revealed, adding that: when retailed it is 5 for 1,000frs and 2 or 3 for 500frs…This has a break down in the business, and many buyers are not ready to come to us,” Violette lamented.

Even though the prices of commodities has increased, some say it’s normal and has no toll on their business.

“The prices had increased since last year so it’s normal besides If I was to buy a carton for 10000frs and I buy for 12,000frs it’s not a loss so it has no effect on me,” Anthony said.
