Limbe still in shock after three die in ghastly road accident

Residents of Cameroon’s seaside town of Limbe are yet to come to terms with a gruesome accident that claimed two lives yesterday.

The incident that also paralysed traffic in some parts of the town temporarily, occurred when a heavy duty truck lost control and derailed from the highway.

“The trailer lost control after Mile 4 as it was descending. It hit a number of bikes and only stopped after crashing at Mile 1,” says an eyewitness.

The trailer, he said, “killed a call box operator and a petrol vendor”.

The fuel trader reports say was crushed first and his product spilled, causing a fire that killed the call box operator as she struggled to escape the scene.

Images on social media showed the second victim burnt and lying under electric cables apparently brought down by the trailer.

“The driver and his assistant survived though the accident killed others and destroyed electric poles by the roadside,” the eyewitness adds.

A third victim, a lady was rushed to a health facility and her condition remains unknown at the moment.

Yesterday’s accident added to a myriad of others recorded in Cameroon within the past four months.

While government has always gone after agencies whose buses get involved in the accidents, many have opined that more needs to be done including the improvement of the road networks in the country.
