Limbe Students Cry Foul Over Exorbitant HND Registration Fees

Schools in Cameroon have been interrupted for over two months now due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With examination classes set to resume soon, measures are being put in place curn the spread of the virus.

While some students are worried about their exams, students of the Gulf Field Institute of Petroleum and Management Science in Limbe, South West Region say they are worried about not being permitted to take their exams.

Joel (not real name), a student of the institution believes he and his mates set to sit in for an HND are being exploited.
“The school administration is forcing us to pay 153,000FCFA (252 US Dollars) instead of the 52,000FCFA required by the ministry for my specialty.”

“Some of us have paid 100,000FCFA (164,000 US Dollars) but they are still refusing to register us and the registration is drawing to end. We are so frustrated and confused right now” he pleads.

Instead of receiving receipts, Joel says they were simply made to sign against their names on a list provided by school authorities.

The son of the school’s CEO who is also in charge of collecting the finances “has vowed never to register us if we don’t pay all the 153,000FCFA” reveals Joel who is worried about missing his examination.

The school administration is yet to respond to the extortion claims.

Introduced in Cameroon 2002, the Higher National Diploma, HND is a two-year professional University program. It was designed to teach the knowledge and skills needed for employment and paving the way for a Bachelor’s Degree Program.

This year’s HND defense is slated for 15 June, with practicals on the 29th of June and the written session on the 13th of July 2020.
