Liverpool’s quest for the English Premier League title took a hit as they were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford. The result leaves them in second place, behind Arsenal on goal difference, with a crucial Europa League clash against Atalanta looming large.

Mohamed Salah salvaged a point for the visitors with a penalty late in the second half, cancelling out Alejandro Garnacho’s early disallowed effort and a stunning strike from Facundo Pellistri. Luis Diaz had put Liverpool ahead with a spectacular scissor-kick, but United fought back valiantly to take the lead through Bruno Fernandes’ audacious long-range effort.

The draw marked a rare misstep for Jurgen Klopp’s men. They had previously enjoyed a perfect record of converting leads into victories, stretching back 16 games. This time, however, they were unable to hold on after Diaz’s opener.

Manchester United, on the other hand, can take heart from their spirited performance despite failing to register a win in their last three league outings. They were under siege for much of the first half as Liverpool dominated possession and peppered David de Gea’s goal with a staggering 28 shots – the most United have ever conceded at Old Trafford in the Premier League era (since 2003-04).

This fixture also highlighted United’s defensive frailties. This was the ninth time in 15 home games this season that they have fallen behind 1-0, a worrying trend that echoes their struggles in the 2013-14 campaign.

Both sides will be looking to bounce back next weekend. Liverpool turn their focus to European competition with a Europa League quarter-final against Atalanta, while United travel to the south coast for a Premier League clash against Bournemouth.
