An accident involving some Malawian footballers and their supporters has left at least 22 persons dead with several others in a critical state.
The tragic incident occurred on the morning of Sunday, June 4, 2023.
According to reports, the victims were in a 10-ton truck that accidentally overturned on the Karonga-Chitipa M26 Road, leaving at least 22 dead.
According to the Malawian police’s initial investigations, the truck’s driver lost control of it because he was going too fast and couldn’t navigate a left bend. The result was that the car struck the road embankment and overturned sideways.
Some of the accident victims suffered significant brain injuries as a result of the collision, which raises the possibility that the death toll will rise over the next few hours.
The football players and supporters of a division one league were returning from a football match when the tragic incident took place.
All of Northern Malawi’s Sunday football games have been rescheduled out of respect for the accident victims. This decision intends to pay tribute to the victims and provide the neighbourhood a chance to join together in sorrow and reflection.
The event draws attention to a rising concern about road safety in Malawi. There have been 5,553 accidents reported in 2022 alone, according to recent numbers released by the police, which is an unsettling trend.
Tragically, these tragedies caused the deaths of 1,529 people and the injury of 573 more people. These statistics highlight the urgent need for all-encompassing action to address the nation’s road safety challenges.
