Mali Protests: President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita extends peace offer to opposition coalition

The Malian president on Sunday June 14th, 2020 extended a hand of reconciliation to the opposition coalition that had challenged his authority and calling for him to step down, as well as the religious leaders of the country.

“My door is open and my hand is always extended” president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita said in a speech on public TV. “I look forward to meeting soon with the leaders of the opposition movement”.

The coalition movement which was said to have challenged the powers of the Malian leader is headed by Imam Mahmoud Dicko of the Front for the Safeguard of Democracy (FSD). It brings together the main opposition of the country for a stronger alliance to help battle the president and the ruling party out of power.

Earlier in this month, the Malian president Boubacar Keita who has been at the helm of the country was faced with huge calls by the opposition for him to step down from power as soon as possible.

The call led by the coalition opposition party saw thousands of Malians gather in the nation’s capital in Bamako singing liberation songs and asking the president to abdicate his position.

The protesting crowds complained about heightened corruption that has rocked Mali throughout his presidency.

The president has been heavily criticised by Malians for his failure to handle the various conflicts ongoing in the country, claiming that if he is not replaced with immediate effect, then he could soon plunge the country in an unprecedented civil war.

espite the several calls for the president to step down from power, he seems not to be considering the possibility of that happening anytime soon, or at least before he completes his present term of office.
