Manchester United’s push for Champions League qualification continued with a 2-0 victory over Everton, which was marred by an injury to Marcus Rashford.
United had 21 shots on goal in the first half but only one was successful, with Scott McTominay scoring his third goal of the season to give the hosts a deserved half-time lead, before substitute Anthony Martial sealed the victory with his eighth career goal against Everton.
The victory, which moved United three points clear of fourth-place Newcastle, was marred by an injury to in-form striker and top-scorer Rashford, who hobbled off the field with nine minutes remaining with a suspected groin injury.
Man United dominated the first half, registering 21 shots, but Pickford has done an outstanding job in preventing the hosts from taking the lead. He made five saves in the first period to deny Rashford and Antony one-on-one chances, while Wan-Bissaka missed an open goal.
Simms nearly scored at the other end after Everton broke through the Red Devils’ defense, but his effort sailed past the left post. McTominay then broke the deadlock in the 36th minute after a brilliant pass from Sancho, giving Manchester United a 1-0 lead at the half.
The home team was much more cautious in their attacking in the second half, but they got the job done after Martial came off the bench to score in the 71st minute. Everton were unable to mount a comeback, and the game ended 2-0.
Manchester United have won 39 Premier League games against Everton, which is the joint most in the competition’s history (also 39 wins for the Red Devils against Spurs).
Everton have only lost three games against Manchester United in a single season three times (1993-94, 2015-16, and 2022-23), with this being the 18th season the two sides have met three times or more.
Manchester United have won 23 of their 28 home games this season (D3 L2), their most wins in a single season at Old Trafford since 2010-11. (26).
