Mariah Carey
Legendary American singer Mariah Carey has announced the devastating loss of both her mother, Patricia Carey, and her sister, Alison Carey, who passed away on the same day over the weekend.
The Grammy-winning artist shared the tragic news on Monday, August 26, expressing her profound sorrow. “My heart is broken to have lost my mother this past weekend,” Carey said in a statement. “Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister also lost her life on the same day.”
While Carey, 55, did not disclose the causes of their deaths, she emphasized the pain of the double loss. She also mentioned feeling fortunate to have spent time with her mother during the week leading up to her passing, and she has requested privacy during this difficult time.
Patricia Carey, 87, was a former opera singer and vocal coach of Irish-American descent. Mariah Carey has spoken openly about the complicated relationship she shared with her mother, which she detailed in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey. The memoir sheds light on the challenges of their bond, marked by professional jealousy and emotional strain. Despite the difficulties, Carey expressed deep love for her mother, dedicating the book to her with the words, “To Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I believe did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”
In a 2022 interview with Gayle King, Carey revealed that criticism from her mother during her upbringing had a lasting impact on her, though she credited Patricia with exposing her to music, laying the foundation for her remarkable career.
Mariah Carey’s relationship with her older sister, Alison, was similarly fraught. The two were estranged for years, with Carey stating in her memoir that it was “emotionally and physically safer” for her to maintain no contact. This estrangement escalated into a legal battle when Alison sued Mariah for $1.2 million, accusing her of causing “immense emotional distress” with the release of the memoir, which Alison described as “vindictive.”
Mariah Carey’s father, Alfred Roy Carey, passed away in 2002 from cancer at the age of 72.
As one of the most successful singers in history, Carey’s achievements are legendary. Her iconic holiday single “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is the best-selling Christmas song by a female artist, and she holds the record for the most Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles by a solo artist, with 19 chart-topping hits. She has sold over 220 million records worldwide and served as a judge on the popular competition show American Idol.
This double tragedy represents a deeply personal loss for a woman who has spent much of her life in the public eye, and her fans around the world are mourning with her.
