The city of Maroua was alive with excitement on Saturday, May 3rd, 2025, as it hosted the annual equestrian race at the Lamido Yaya Dairou Stadium. The event brought together riders, breeders, and horse enthusiasts from across Cameroon. They also included participants from neighbouring Chad and Nigeria for a day of thrilling competitions and cultural celebrations.

A Celebration of Sahelian Heritage

The event demonstrated the strength, speed, and endurance of horses, which hold a special place in the culture of the Sahel region. For the participants, the race was more than just about winning. It was also about honouring a deep-rooted equestrian tradition that spans generations.

“The horse is more than a mode of transport in our culture; it’s a symbol of prestige and identity,” said one of the local riders. “Today is about celebrating that heritage.”

Fast-paced Races and Fierce Competition

The competition was intense as dozens of riders raced across the sandy track at the stadium. Each rider pushed their horse to the limit, aiming for the coveted title of best rider. A panel of experienced judges, veterans of the sport, closely observed the races to ensure fair play and determine the winners.

“The horses showed incredible speed and stamina,” remarked one of the judges. “It’s a true test of both the horse and the rider.”

Prizes and Cultural Exhibitions

The races concluded, and the winners received their prizes, igniting a wave of pride and emotion among the crowd. Cheers and applause filled the atmosphere as the top competitors took their place on the podium.

Cultural exhibitions held alongside the races allowed visitors to explore local handicrafts and enjoy various performances. These activities added a festive touch to the day, allowing attendees to experience the rich cultural heritage of the region.

A Moment of Unity

The equestrian race in Maroua was not just a competition; it was a celebration of community and tradition. It served as a reminder of the deep connections that the horse fosters among the people of the Sahel and the role it plays in bridging cultures across national borders.

“This event brings us all together,” said a spectator from Chad. “It’s a way to unite people from different countries through something we all cherish—the horse.”

The 2025 edition of the Maroua equestrian race will be remembered as a moment of cultural exchange, excitement, and pride for the people of the region.
