Maroua: Police arrest female gang leader, six members

The police have arrested a gang of seven armed robbers headed by a woman in Maroua, headquarters of Cameroon’s Far North Region.

Fadimatou Amal, head of the notorious gang that specialised in stealing motorcycles, was arrested Monday, May 22, alongside her son and other members of the gang.

The gang members, aged between 30 and 40, were presented to the public at the courtyard of ESIR, the special rapid intervention branch of the police, on Monday.

Police Commissioner and the head of ESIR in Maroua, Boubakary Tairou, told journalists the gang’s activities went beyond the city of Maroua.

“Three were caught with a motorcycle. As soon as they were brought to the central police station for investigation, we continued our investigations. Then we got our hands on a lot of them, including the mastermind of this gang,” he said.

He added, “A certain Fadimatou Amal, according to our findings, was the one who handled the teams of motorcycle thieves and the receivers. She was accompanied by her son named Boubakary Bello, who acted as a relay between the thieves and the receivers.”

The Commissioner said the suspects provided them information, which they used to track and arrest their accomplices operating outside the city of Maroua.
