MATGENIE workers on strike over 16 months unpaid salary

Workers of the National Civil Engineering Equipment Pool (MATGENIE), yesterday July 5 came out massively to protest for 16 months of unpaid salary.

“We don’t have salaries, our children are not going to school. We ourselves, some of us are sick and dying just like that. No medicine, nothing to drink as medicine,” decried an employee.

These workers indicated that aside from the 16 months’ unpaid salary, they are also striking for the future prospects of being paid what they are rightfully due.

“We are also striking for the future of MATGENIE. If the 15 months are paid today, what about the future? shall we keep reclaiming our money from the state.” another worker stated.

One of the strikers further disclosed that the company has been witnessing such a crisis since the year 2017.

Informed of the strike action, the manager of the company arrived at the scene and disclosed to the employees that the situation at the moment is beyond control.

He went further to contradict himself by asking the employees to maintain calm, assuring them that their problems will be resolved by the end of the week.

A promise, that was termed by the employees as “a dream”, considering it is not the first time such promise is being made to them.
