The councilors of Matomb, a town in Cameroon’s Center Region, Nyong and Kelle Division, have accused their mayor, Nyobe Fils of mismanaging public funds.
“We signed some projects at the beginning of the mandate, but unfortunately they were not completed. We are then asked him how he managed the council funds because we as well are obliged to give account to the people,” a Matomb councilor explained.
According to a report by Equinoxe TV, a recent council session held in Matomb ended in a fiasco as the councilors turned the hall into a battlefield.
In the course of the session, the councilors were split into two, those in support of the mayor and those against.
In response to this, Nyobe Fils, said that the goal of the session was to make a budget, not to question how the money for past projects was spent.
He said, “We can’t be here for the voting on the financial budget while others are talking about administrative account management.”
With the help of the Divisional Officer of the Municipality, calm was brought back to the session.
The determined councilors, on the other hand, have insisted that the mayor must show proof of how the council’s money was spent.
