Mayor Tanjong Martin Mishongong, of Tubah has been awarded the Best Council Award for what has been described as “his exceptional contributions to waste management, environmental protection, climate change, and youth empowerment.” The award ceremony took place at the Yaoundé Hilton Hotel on Thursday, July 25, 2024.

The accolade recognizes Tanjong Martin’s significant efforts in improving the Tubah municipality. A jury comprised of Akere Muna as President, Senator Nfon Ekoko Mukete as Secretary, and peace advocate Esther Omam as a Member, commended Martin’s achievements as “outstanding, remarkable, and applaudable.”

In his acceptance speech, Mayor Tanjong Martin detailed his administration’s work in waste management. “We have employed about 200 youths who go around sorting the waste into biodegradable and non-biodegradable. I can assure you that you cannot find waste littered on the streets of Tubah,” he stated.

The Cameroon English Language Newspaper Publishers Association (CENPA), organized the award ceremony. CENPA is an association of 35 English language newspaper publishers. It aims to promote national unity, peace reporting, and responsible journalism.

Mayor Tanjong Martin was criticized for failing to pay the salary of council workers. In an exclusive interview with MMI, his staff said they could barely take care of themselves and their family. The mayor defended himself and said the Anglophone Crisis greatly affected council revenue.

He became mayor in 2014 and was voted President of the United Councils and Cities of Cameroon (UCCC) in Mezam Division.
