Mayors Say State Budget Allocation For Councils Remains Insufficient

The Government of Cameroon has increased the budgetary allocation to local councils to the tune of FCFA 100 million.

This amount will be shared to each of the 360 municipal councils across Cameroon, to boost decentralization. The text to this effect, was signed over the weekend by Joseph Dion Ngute, Prime Minister, Head of Government.

Reacting to this decision, some mayors in Cameroon say the increased amount is good, but not sufficient. They say the amount is largely insufficient for meaningful development in a larger council area. Some questioned why the Government will accord an equal amount amount to each of the 360 councils, whereas they have different sizes and development challenges.
That is the view of Mayor Job Theophile Kwapnang of Dla 3 Council.

The Mayors say decentralization in Cameroon has been stagnating and far from attaining the level of South Africa, Senegal and East African countries.

We also compiled the reactions of Pierre Simon Ediba of Obala, Paul Ngabir Bantar of Nkambe and Robert Wafo of Douala 2 subdivision.
