Mbororo Gunmen Blamed for Fatal Attack on Couple in Sop

Mbororo gunmen are alleged to have killed a couple in Sop, a village in the Ndu subdivision of the Donga Mantung Division in Cameroon’s northwest.

According to local sources, Mbororo gunmen attacked the victims, identified as Mr. and Mrs. Mangoh George Nyako, in the early hours of October 1. A source who contacted MMI via Facebook Messenger confirmed the identity of the victims.

“Mr. and Mrs. Mangoh George Nyako were killed in the early morning of Tuesday, 1st October 2024, by Mbororo gunmen,” the source stated.

“They were attacked with a local gun,” another local source confirmed, though no further details were provided.

“Their son is a Baptist pastor by the name of Wisiy Kingsley in Kumbo,” added the person who reached out to MMI on Facebook.

Mr. George died instantly at the scene, while his wife was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries from gunshot wounds.

“This is the third attack in three months. The man was shot dead, and his wife had fatal knife wounds, which caused her to die before reaching the local health center,” the source explained.

Sop has experienced a series of deadly attacks in recent weeks, which locals attribute to armed Fulani herdsmen. However, it remains unclear whether the recent assault was carried out by the same group, as Wimbum Fons and Mbororo community leaders had recently committed to peace during a meeting with local authorities.

“Despite the peace mission by the Divisional Officer and the visit of the Fon of Donga Mantung to the prime minister last month,” a local added, suggesting that tensions remain despite recent efforts toward reconciliation.

As of now, the local administration has not commented on the latest brutal attack.
